There was a Scaggs family in Prince George's County, Maryland beginning about 1750 on a farm called "Chew's Folly." I posted about this family here. Several family members appear to be buried in a family cemetery in present-day College Park, Maryland.
Richard Scaggs was likely the younger brother of the John Scaggs (born 1721) who was father of Zachariah and likely husband to Ruth Elkins and possibly father to Old Peter Skaggs. So this Richard Scaggs may have been uncle to Old Peter. Richard was born in 1724 in Kent County and married Sarah Selby in Prince George's County about 1750. Sarah Selby Scaggs inherited the farm "Chew's Folly" from her father. Upon her death, her son, James Scaggs, sued his siblings to obtain control of Chew's Folly. This James Scaggs had a second wife Mary Brinker and they moved from Virginia to Chew's Folly.
The interesting thing about all this is a 1916 column in the Sunday Star (Washington, DC) by a writer named "The Rambler" describing a Scaggs family cemetery in the Daniels Park neighborhood of College Park, Maryland. The Rambler identifies the graves of James Scaggs and Mary Brinker Scaggs, their grandson George Scaggs (son of Isaac Pinckney Scaggs) and two old, large, partially sunken tombstones marked "Father" and "Mother." My theory is that these two graves marked "Father" and "Mother" are the graves of Richard Scaggs and Sarah Selby Scaggs.
The Scaggs Family Cemetery is catalogued in an inventory of historic cemeteries as HS 66-069 Lot 73, Addition to Daniels Park, Erie Street and Rhode Island Avenue, College Park. Anyone know anything about this cemetery?
Peter Skaggs is a common ancestor for many Skaggs, Scaggs and Skeggs families throughout the United States. This site exists as a single point of contact to encourage researchers to work together to uncover his place in their family histories.
