Skaggs Family Groups

Since a limited amount of DNA testing has indicated that there are two or more distinct Skaggs families in the United States I have decided to try and separate the known Skaggs families into groups so that when DNA results come in we know which family we are talking about.  Here goes:

  1. James Skaggs/Rachel of Virginia- the "Longhunters", James Jr., Charles, Henry, etc. and their descendants in Green and Hart Counties, KY
  2. Aaron Scaggs/Susanna Hyatt of Prince George's, MD - includes the Charles Scaggs who died c. 1749 in Maryland and his three sons Charles, James and Samuel.  Charles, who was likely a Safeway Skaggs, found in East Tennessee c. 1800 and in the illegal Simms Settlement in Mississippi/Alabama c. 1810, James was found in East Tennessee and Warren County, KY c. 1810 and Samuel is the supposed ancestor of Pryor Lee Skaggs.  Likely in this group is James C. Skaggs of SC and later Knox County, TN.
  3. Richard Scaggs/Grace of Kent County, MD - Includes the Maryland-Eastern Shore Scaggs, John Scaggs of Montgomery County, VA and likely Zachariah of Russell County, VA, Old Peter and Solomon of Lawrence County, KY and Joseph of Montgomery County, VA.  Also the Richard Scaggs/Sarah Selby family of Scaggsville, MD and descendants including Christopher Scaggs of Spartanburg County, SC and William Scaggs of Putnam County, GA.
  4. Richard Scaggs/Mary Brashier of Frederick, MD - includes the Thomas Skaggs of Greenbrier/Monroe/Wolf Creek, VA/West Virginia c. 1800.
So far we have reports of Y-chromosome testing corresponding to Skaggs descended from the West Virginia Skaggs in Group 4 (R1b) and from Peter Skaggs in Group 3 (R1a).  Granted, these are just two samples but, if correct, indicate that Groups 3 and 4 are separate families.  This would be big news, proving that the Richard Scaggs who married Grace and the Richard who married Mary Brashier were different persons and not the same Richard with two marriages.

Those of you who have taken autosomal DNA tests showing you are related to Skaggs, 1) which Skaggs group are you a part of and 2) which groups are showing up as your relatives for the autosomal test and 3) which are not?

Me:
1) I'm from Group 3, descended from Old Peter Scaggs.  2) My DNA relatives have been from Group 3, most have descended from Old Peter and two from Joseph Skaggs of Montgomery County, VA c. 1810.  3)  I'm surprised that I haven't found any DNA relatives yet from Group 1 "The Longhunters" since they lived in Montgomery and Russell Counties of Virginia as did Peter Scaggs.

  1. #1 I am a Skaggs descendant from Peter Skaggs, that puts me in group 3
#2 I have matched with other group 3 persons and I am currently investigating a possible match with a documented descendant of the Long Hunters. It is a lot of work but I think my match may be from a line documented in the Moses Skaggs estate papers. When I finish verifying the family connections I will send you a summary of the results.

  3. I have Ancestry DNA tests for several people in my family and we all show links to Abraham Hankins and wife Sarah Skaggs. I have been told Sarah was a daughter of James Skaggs but not sure that is correct.
