DNA Testing: Old Peter and Martha Were Not Native American

An anonymous correspondent has informed me the results of an autosomal DNA test, and these results are important to descendants of Old Peter Scaggs who are interested in possible Native American heritage.  Our correspondent is a documented direct descendant of Old Peter and Martha and the DNA test showed ZERO Native American ancestry.  Not a trace.  So the multi-generational rumor that Martha Cothron was Cherokee appears to be just a myth.

  1. My mother is a direct descendant of Peter and Martha Skaggs and she had the same results - no American Indian DNA.

  2. I'm a descendant and no indian blood either.

  3. I'm related to Peter Skaggs and Martha through his son John. We had always heard the stories the Martha Skaggs was at least half-Cherokee. My test showed no Indian at all.

  5. It may be that our Native American blood is too diluted to be detected by commercial tests. Check out http://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2014/11/24/ask-ancestry-anne-where-is-my-native-american-dna/ .
I have two lines back to Old Peter and one to his brother Solomon so I'm anxious to see my autosomal DNA test results.

    1. I don't know, I would expect all these tests would show about 1% Indian DNA if Peter's wife was 1/2 Cherokee. I hope you decide to share your results even if as an anonymous comment.

  6. My autosomal DNA test shows no Native American blood. If Martha was 1/2 Cherokee, I would be 1/128 Cherokee or 0.78 %. The test results don't show fractions or decimals, all of the numbers reported are whole numbers.

    1. Thanks for posting your autosomal test result. Did it show up as zero or as <1%?

  7. Hello, I stumbled upon this page while researching this topic. I am, as far as I can tell, a direct descendant of Peter Scaggs. My dad and I have taken DNA tests. His came back with 0.1% Native American (his mother was 2nd generation American, family from Germany, very unlikely it came from her). My test doesn't show any Native American ancestry. My paternal haplogroup is R1a1a* (my dad too of course).

  8. Interesting. I have heard that my grandfather's grandmother was half Native American. That would make me 1/32 Native. I wonder if tests of older relatives with closer relationships to them would result different because I have not been tested, but if my info is correct, if I was tested, I should show 3% and my grandfather would show 12% larger than your 1%

    1. So, Melvin, did you take an autosomal DNA test? If so, did you find any Native American DNA?

  10. Old Peter and Martha are my 5th Great Grandparents. Their son, Peter and his wife, Clerinda Prince, are my 4th Great Grandparents. I will be doing the ancestry DNA test (it's what my husband and I are doing for Christmas this year). I will be sure to report my results here. Thank you for posting about this.

    1. Please report back with your results. Those results could be very interesting or very confusing. Clarinda Prince was supposed to have been part Cherokee, a great-granddaughter of Chief Big Eagle, according to a published source back in the 1930s. So you may come back with Native American DNA.

    2. What were your results? I've found no proof of Clarinda's Native heritage (but I'd love to see some!)

  11. I just received my Ancestry DNA results and was very surprised that it shows Native American. Now, it is only <1%, but I truly expected none. I'm one who has always believed that the stories were just that, stories. But, maybe there is some truth somewhere.

    1. That's an interesting result. Actually, that 1% Native American sounds about right. Thanks for posting it. Do you happen to be a descendant of the Prince family? The Prince family has a strong association with the Cherokee. I know Peter Skaggs, Jr. married Clarinda Prince so the Prince family could be another source of Native American DNA for descendants of Peter Skaggs, Jr.

I uploaded my raw DNA to Gedmatch and it gives a 1.64% American Indian. I have no idea how they measure the test in comparison to Ancestry, but thought I'd report it here.

    3. If you are interested in the Prince Family, Google "william prince ted griffin" since Ted Griffin has done a lot of research on the Prince Family of Lawrence County, KY.

  12. Im not a skaggs and dont have a dog in this fight but just thought i would let you know that two friends of mine who are for the most part full blood Natives and tribal members from very respected Native families took the ancestry test and both showed no Native ancestry at all. Native ancestry doesnt always show on the dna tests. I think many articles have been written about this.

  13. I just uploaded my raw Ancestry DNA to Gedmatch and it reveals a .71 American Indian. My line is (4thG) Old Peter/Martha Cothron, (3rdG) Peter Jr./Clarinda Prince, and (2ndG) Peter III/Martha Rigsby.

    1. Thanks for posting your results. Prince descendants seem to be finding Native American DNA. Others, not so much. But we will keep trying.

  14. GEDmatch just updated my American Indian DNA to .95 of a percent. By the way, what was the published source back in the 1930's concerning Chief Big Eagle ?

    1. I think it's at this Facebook page, but I'd take it with a grain of salt. A lot of these Indian stories were just campfire tales.

    1. You may want to consider posting your results to GEDmatch so you can match relatives testing with other companies.

  16. My husband is descended from Old Peter Skaggs and Martha Cothrun. My mother-in-law did the Family Tree DNA test and it didn't show any Native American DNA, so she was disappointed. In her case, you could tell by looking at family photos that she had Native American ancestry on both sides (she has other Native American ancestors in addition to Martha Cothrun). Some Native American DNA shows up on GedMatch, by essentially looking at relatedness to the Clovis baby.

If you upload your raw data to a site such as GedMatch, you can use different geneticists' ethnicity calculators, and you can compare your DNA to other descendants of a given person.

Geneticists are now finding that the founding population of North and South America may have had 1/3 DNA in common with Europeans/West Eurasians. That means that all the DNA calculators are wrong. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/342/6157/409

Do not say, "Oh, I guess I have no Native American ancestry," just because a bunch of geneticists said so. First, all they can look at is which genes you happened to inherit. A person is still your ancestor if you didn't happen to inherit any/many genes from him/her (as may be the case after many generations). I have three daughters, who all look quite different. Siblings inherit different genes. Over many generations, this adds up. Genetics field is still in its infancy and has a long way to go.

    1. We're still testing descendants of Peter and Martha despite a bunch of zeroes. There is enormous value in matching other branches of the Skaggs family even if the ancestors we thought were Cherokee end up being something else.

  17. I was wondering if anyone has ever found any military service for Peter Skaggs/ Near the end of the war around 1782 - 1783, he would have been old enough to have possibly served.

The Catron Were Cherokee Indian Intermarried And Raised With The Kettering/Keasling Family Of Grayson County Virginia. Ancestry Said I Had no Indian DNA But GEDMATCH DOES. I Have Several Cousins With American Indian DNA On Ancestry. I Have Skaggs And Catron Cousins. You should be A DNA Hit to me. Look for me on Ancestry, Gedmatch, FTDNA-Stacey Parks
