Updating the Skaggs Y-DNA Project in Family Tree DNA

I like to occasionally provide an update about the Skaggs Y-DNA project that is being managed on Family Tree DNA.  Usually I blend the DNA test results with the genealogy work that's been done to create several Skaggs family groups.  This time I will "follow the science" by using the Family Tree DNA haplogroup chart to create the Skaggs family groups and fill in each family group with the known genealogy of only the test participants involved.

Update on the Skaggs DNA Project

It's been awhile since the last post.  We've been going down genealogical rabbit holes for months so not much new to post.  However, I thought I should provide an update regarding the Skaggs DNA project.  We have some results to share based on both the Y-DNA testing and the autosomal DNA testing.

Skaggs DNA Testing: Putting It All Together

The Skaggs Y-DNA project has been working diligently testing male volunteers who descend along different Skaggs family lines.  They've been aligning the DNA test results with the ongoing genealogical research effort to identify distinct, yet related, Skaggs families.  The results follow below the fold.

Illinois Skeggs Wanted for DNA Testing

The Skaggs family Y-DNA project is looking for descendants of a Skeggs from the Chicago, Illinois area.  Male descendants of Robert Hugh Skeggs (1925-2002) are needed to take a Y-DNA test to identify how this Skeggs family line fits and where they come from.

Nashville Skeggs Descendants Wanted for DNA Testing

The Skaggs family Y-DNA project is looking for descendants of a Skeggs from the Nashville, Tennessee area.  Male descendants of Thomas Leonard Skeggs (1810-1880) are needed to take a Y-DNA test to identify how this Skeggs family line fits and where they come from.

DNA Testing Update: Skaggs and the Isle of Man

It’s time for an update on the Skaggs DNA testing.  Several Skaggs have submitted Y-DNA test results since the last time we checked in and additional autosomal DNA testing results for Skaggs descendants have been posted to GEDMatch.  These new tests have produced some interesting results.

The Big-Y DNA Test is on Sale

For men with the Skaggs, Scaggs or Skeggs surname interested in tracing your Skaggs ancestry back to colonial times or perhaps Europe, the Family Tree DNA Big-Y test is on sale through Thanksgiving (UPDATE: now Christmas) for $399.

Skaggs Y-DNA Testing Update

Since it's a new year I thought I would give an update on where we stand with Skaggs Y-DNA testing. Based on our testing results to date it appears there are two distinct Skaggs families in America:
  • Old Peter, the Longhunters, the Safeway Skaggs, James and Susanna, etc. whose descendants test with a Y-haplogroup of some flavor of R-M417.  These Skaggs match the Keig test-takers from the Isle of Man.
  • Descendants of the Thomas Skaggs born 1728 in Maryland who migrated to the Greenbrier region of West Virginia.  These Skaggs test with some flavor of R-M269

Calling all Skaggs! Volunteers needed!

There is news from our cousins on the Isle of Man. Chris Keig is starting a project to test whether we are descendants of the Viking kings who ruled the Isle of Man over 800 years ago and he needs our help.

DNA Testing: The Skaggs and the Isle of Man

In my previous post we were introduced to the Big Y DNA test and Christopher Keig from the Isle of Man was gracious enough to explain how his Big Y testing project determined that the Keig and Skaggs families were related and that the Skaggs family was of Manx origin. Below the fold I'll let Chris' project description from the Family Tree DNA website describe the findings so far.  Finally, I'll make another call for males with the Skaggs, Scaggs and Skeggs surname to volunteer for his Big Y project at FTDNA.

DNA Testing: The "Big Y" Testing for Skaggs Origins

Recently I received e-mail from a correspondent who took the “Big Y” DNA test at the Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) testing service.  He is a descendant of Old Peter Skaggs with the Skaggs surname and his results are very interesting, perhaps pointing the way toward finding the European origins of the Skaggs family.
