Name That Skaggs: What was Old Peter's wife's maiden name?

Old Peter Skaggs had a wife, Martha, whose last name has been described as Cothron, Catherine, Cohun, etc. Below the fold is a photocopy of Rev. Richard Whitt's minister return for Montgomery County, Virginia in 1788 that shows Peter Skaggs married to Martha C____?

The 1787 Montgomery County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List C

Henry Skaggs and the Catrons

The Revolutionary War veteran Henry Skaggs, born 1759 in South Carolina, had some interesting testimony in his pension application.  This is the Henry we think was son of Aaron Skaggs, possibly a brother to the Longhunters based on his testimony that Henry and Archibald Skaggs were cousins. We know Archibald Skaggs was son of Charles Skaggs the Longhunter. Many researchers believe that Aaron died young enough that he wasn't mentioned in the Moses Skaggs estate papers as one of Moses' brothers.  Anyway, back to the pension application...

The Catron Family and the Cherokee Indians

In previous posts here and here, I discussed the DNA evidence and circumstantial evidence pointing to the possibility of Old Peter's wife, Martha Cothon, actually being related to the Catron family. I have been referred to a valuable historical resource, The History of the Cherokee Indians and Their Legends and Folk Lore by the Cherokee historian Emmet Starr. I have put a link to this book in the "Interesting Links" section of this site for convenience. The Catron family appears in this book as having married into an important Cherokee family.

DNA Testing: More on the Skaggs / Catron Connections

I recently wrote a blog post about some DNA testing relationships between Skaggs descendants and Catron descendants that may indicate that a Catron family member may have married into a Skaggs family line.  After a bit of research we have some specifics about these genealogical relationships that seem to support the DNA testing results.

DNA Testing: Martha Cothon - A Brick Wall Crumbling or a Wild Goose Chase?

A descendant of Old Peter has reported DNA matches with two descendants of the Catron family.  The Catrons appear to have been German immigrants originally named Kettering who immigrated through Philadelphia in 1765 and traveled south to Virginia the following year.  These folks may have come as the Kettering family, but once in Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee they became the Catron, Ketron, Katron, Cattron, Ketring, etc. families.
