Joseph and Martha Scaggs were listed in the 1810 and 1820 censuses for Montgomery County, Virginia. They had the following children:
1) Polly Scaggs b. ca. 1795; m. 21 October 1813 Montgomery Co. VA to Samuel Brammer
2) Rutha Scaggs b. ca. 1798; m. 23 December 1817 Montgomery Co. VA to George Cooper
3) William Scaggs b. ca. 1800; m. 4 February 1825 Montgomery Co. VA to Miram Reed
4) Nancy Scaggs b. ca. 1805; d. 30 March 1878 Wise Co. VA; m. 6 November 1821 Montgomery Co. VA to George D. Reed
5) Lydia Scaggs b. December 1808; m. Andrew R. Altizer
6) Rhoda Scaggs b. ca. 1812; m. 10 August 1830 to Charles Akers
7) Stephenia Scaggs b. ca. 1813; m.____ Akers she was a widow by 1850
In 1795 both Peter Scaggs and Joseph Scaggs were sued by two men, Ingles and Russell. Also, in 1798 Solomon Scaggs (Peter's brother) was sued by Ingles and Russell.
We can establish Joseph's parents as William and Esther. William settled land on the Little River in Virginia in 1772 and died prior to Esther getting 40 acres of the land surveyed in 1775:
Montgomery Co., Va., Order Books, p. 141: Joseph Skeggs, heir to Wm.
Skeggs, dec'd--acres, on Little River to include 40 acres surveyed for
Esther Skeggs April 19, 1775.
Montgomery Co., Va., Order Books, p. 204: Joseph Scaggs heir at law to Wm
Scaggs commissioners certificate for 200 acres on Little River to include
improvement, 40 acres of which where surveyed for Esther Skeggs, April 19,
1775.
Montgomery Co., Va., Order Books, p. 236: Joseph Skeggs heirs to Wm. Skeggs
dec'd, 200 ares on Little River, 40 acres survey for esther 1775, settled
1772.
I can't prove it yet, but I have a theory that this William Scaggs was born sometime around 1740 since his eldest, and possibly only son, Joseph Scaggs, was born around 1765. If so, William might be a brother to Zachariah Scaggs, also born around 1740. So when Zachariah's father, John, died c. 1779 he would have been preceded in death by William, therefore Zachariah would have been heir-at-law to John as his eldest living son.
Peter Skaggs is a common ancestor for many Skaggs, Scaggs and Skeggs families throughout the United States. This site exists as a single point of contact to encourage researchers to work together to uncover his place in their family histories.

Did William and Esther have any daughters ? If so, what were their names ?
ReplyDeleteDo we know the content(reason) of the lawsuit against Peter/Joseph Skaggs in 1795 by Ingles and Russell ? Also Solomon as well in 1798 ?
ReplyDeleteI'm not aware of anyone knowing the details of the lawsuits. Those details might contain information about the relationship between Peter, Joseph and Solomon.

DeleteWHAT BOOK, DOCUMENT OR SOURCE STATES THAT PETER/JOSEPH/SOLOMON WERE BEING SUED BY INGLES AND RUSSELL IN 1795/1798 ?
ReplyDeleteI've seen these lawsuits referenced by researchers on the internet, likely from the Montgomery County, VA Order Books for 1795 and 1798 from the Library of Virginia. Those films would be at any LDS Family History Center or by inter-library loan from the Library of Virginia.
