This DNA result is BIG because it provides evidence that:
- Old Peter Skaggs was related to Rachel Skaggs, wife of William Calvin Lester, with a high degree of certainty since it is a match of three individuals at a common segment of DNA
- Confirms family relationships through DNA that already existed on paper, e.g. Rachel Skaggs' husband William Calvin Lester posted bond for Old Peter's marriage to Martha Cothon
- At least one other member of the Skaggs family (Rachel) was taken into capitivity with Ruth Skaggs Bishop by the Indians then subsequently rescued and returned to Virginia
- It is less credible that Zachariah Skaggs was the father of either Old Peter or Rachel since he had a son Jeremiah with wife Anne in 1766, about the same time as Old Peter and Rachel were born to a Skaggs father and we know Rachel was born to Ruth Skaggs Bishop, not Anne Skaggs, wife of Zachariah
Does or can this DNA and paper evidence suggest that Old Peter and Rachel Skaggs are possible siblings ?
ReplyDeleteDon't forget, the DNA could be from either parent. Perhaps, instead of Peter and Rachel being related it may be that Peter's wife, Martha, and Rachel may be related. Or Martha and William Lester may be related.
DeleteMy paternal haplogroup is R1a1a* and my GEDmatch kit is M484586. I'm very curious if I share with your other subjects.
ReplyDeleteMy mother is a confirmed descendant of Old Peter Skaggs (assuming no non-paternal events, which may be a big assumption) and her 23andme and Gedmatch kits do not match yours at a minimum of 7 cM. Do you have any Skaggs surname matches on 23andme?
DeleteI have five Skaggs surname matches on 23andme that I'm aware of, two of which share the same paternal haplogroup as I do (both surnames are also Skaggs).
DeleteThis is my paper trail:
1. Randy is the son of Randy R. Skaggs
2. Randy is the son of Rufus E. Skaggs
3. Rufus is the son of Fleming C. Skaggs
4. Fleming is the son of Daniel D. Skaggs
5. Daniel is the son of John W. Skaggs
6. John is the son of John P. Skaggs
7. John is the son of Peter Skaggs
My dad has tested on 23andme as well, but has not been put on GEDmatch yet.
I am desended from Peter Skaggs Martha I just found out from reading posts from others they were Native and people done dna and no indian showed up well if your moms mom mom was white it would show you are white and if it come from your dads side if his dads dad was white it would show white even if you are 90 percent Native American dna testing is not a way sure way to prove anything maybe someday but not yet that why the tribes will not except this proof just look it up for yourself if your grandma told you we are indian and she looked indian chances are your indian I believe my grandma before some body who never even new her the truth is many Indian were not allowed the same freedom as say other ethnic backgrounds and they were in fact many times mistreated murderd thrown in jail for it walked the trail where they cried some of them escaped and hid covering their true heritage changed names and became white but are in reality the true first people of this land so. The history of some of my family is not a happy one with all the stuff they tell you it was with thanks giving and the pilgrams so who is to say now who is Native and who aint I think most of of the people that aint from our neck of the world just like to disprove our heritage because they are jealous ashamed of it or what our people went through and tribes dont want us cause thats more out of the tribes resources. And the goverment dont it for the same reasons They took everything from them. But they cant take our prayers. Sorry I had to say but research it yourself and the truth is here under our nose . If your family said your native then go with it my grandma told me dont tell nobody about our blood because how it was back then I am native american on both sides and Scotch Irish even English and French German. So were not fullblood anything but human and I think were all the same to god and I am proud to be from Brave people who fought and died for this land so we could say these things.
