The Scaggs family below is descended from Old Peter Skaggs yet they are from West Virginia. The few DNA tests we have had indicate that the West Virginia Skaggs descended from Thomas b. 1728 have a Y-haplotype of R1b while Old Peter Skaggs' descendants look like R1a, so I wouldn't expect a family of West Virginia Skaggs to be descended from Old Peter.
This picture was taken about 1914 in Wayne County, West Virginia. Who were these Scaggs? The answer below the fold...
This is a picture of Lindsey Harmon Scaggs, wife Nancy Dalton Scaggs and kids Elizabeth, Henry and Flora. Nancy was rumored by some to be related to the infamous Dalton Gang. However, we know Lindsey Harmon Scaggs was g-g-grandson of Old Peter Skaggs through g-grandfather Lewis, grandfather Squire and father Lewis. His grandfather, Squire, was the Scaggs that moved from Kentucky to West Virginia (then Virginia) just before the Civil War. Squire, according to his obituary below, supposedly fought with General Stonewall Jackson and saw him killed at Chancellorsville.
Squire Scaggs
Squire Scaggs died at Ceredo on the 8th inst., at the home of his son Clark Scaggs, at the age of 94 years.
He was born in Lawrence County, KY., in 1817, and moved to Brush Creek in this county, just before the beginning of the Civil War. He enlisted in the army at its inception and fought during the four years that tried men's souls, and made a valiant soldier in the cause which he advanced. He had the honor of fighting under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. He was with Stonewall Jackson in the battle of Chancellorsville, and witnessed his death on the field. He participated in the hard fought combat at Gettysburg, and helped to swell the ranks of Lee in Virginia. After the war he settled on Beech Fork where he lived until a few years prior to his death.
He leaves surviving him two sons and five daughters, viz: Jesse H. Scaggs of Wayne; Clark Scaggs,of Ceredo; Mrs. Susan Ferguson, of Huntington; Mrs. John H. and James Smith of Rich Creek, Wayne County; Mrs. Malinda Stephens of Durban Creek, Lawrence County, Ky; and Mrs. Jarrell of Greenup, Ky.
Peter Skaggs is a common ancestor for many Skaggs, Scaggs and Skeggs families throughout the United States. This site exists as a single point of contact to encourage researchers to work together to uncover his place in their family histories.
