Most Ohio Skaggs settlers moved over from Kentucky sometime in the mid-1800s. Many of these Ohio Skaggs are descendants of Old Peter. I was recently shown a Scaggs family with a completely different and somewhat unexpected origin, apparently Maryland in the 1790s.
The settler was a John Scaggs and he showed up in Ohio with the following three records:
1820 census, Belmont County, OH John Scaggs age 45+
1826 tax records, Kirkwood Township, Belmont County, OH John Scaggs
1830 census, Jefferson County, OH, John Scaggs age 60-69
From these census records we can conclude this John Scaggs was born about 1761-1770. From the local records I've been able to determine that this John had at least the following sons: Thomas (born 1797 in Maryland), Matthew (born 1801 in Pennsylvania), Noble (born 1806 with birthplace listed as Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia or Ohio depending on the source), Elisha (born 1808 in Pennsylvania) and Uriah (born 1814 in Pennsylvania). If these really are John's sons then it looks like John moved to Ohio from Pennsylvania sometime in the late 1810s.
Son Uriah Scaggs declared in the 1880 census that both his parents were born in Maryland. If this is true then John and his unknown wife probably were born and married in Maryland. It looks like his oldest son Thomas was born in Maryland also. So we should be looking for a John Scaggs born in Maryland in the 1760s, married in Maryland at least once prior to 1797, moved to Pennsylvania sometime between 1797 and 1801 and finally moved to Ohio in the late 1810s. There weren't that many Scaggs families in Maryland in the 1760s so we should be able to determine where these early Ohio Scaggs pioneers fit.
