The 1787 Montgomery County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List A

The Harrell Collaborative put useful images of the 1787 Montgomery County, Virginia personal property tax list up on the internet for all to use.  This is an important list for descendants of Old Peter Skaggs because it is the year before Old Peter and Martha were married in Montgomery County.  Also, it was the year after William Lester and Rachel Skaggs were married in the same county.  There are some interesting taxpayers on the list and others who are interesting in their absence.

In 1787 in Virginia, heads of household age 21 and older were recorded along with all males age 16-20 and all slaves ages 16+.  Heads of household under age 21 were recorded as both head of household and a person age 16-20.  Some interesting taxpayers on List A taken by William Trigg include:

Blackburn Akers - I think he married Susanna Skaggs, daughter of James and Susanna Scaggs.
John Bishop - Second husband of Ruth Skaggs Bishop.
Archibald Elkins - Son-in-law of John Bishop.
William Luster - Husband of Rachel Skaggs Lester.

Abner Luster - Father of William Luster and father-in-law of Rachel Skaggs Lester.
Thomas Mastin - Led a company of militia from Montgomery County on the Chickamauga Expedition.
Isaac Skeggs - I think this is the younger Isaac who married Nancy Goodwin in 1787.
Samuel Sadler - Provided surety for the marriage of William Lester and Rachel Skaggs.
Archibald Thompson - Father-in-law of Longhunters Henry and Charles Skaggs.
Richard Whitt - Baptist preacher who married William Lester and Rachel Skaggs.
Hezekiah Whitt - Close friend of Thomas Mastin.
