Pounding on Brick Walls: Elizabeth Skaggs

A few months ago a correspondent presented me with a Skaggs mystery.  I must admit I've spent some time working on it and am stuck.  This mystery involves an Elizabeth Skaggs whose parents disappeared prior to the Civil War.  I'm posting what information I know hoping that someone out there can piece together the puzzle of who were Elizabeth's parents.

The legend:  Elizabeth never knew who her parents were or even her birth date.  One day her parents left her and siblings with some neighbors or family to go visit family.  They had to cross a river and evidently drowned, only identified by a bible found nearby.

The facts:  Elizabeth Skaggs first appears in the 1860 Cass County, Missouri census, age 23 born in Missouri, in the same household with a John G Skaggs, age 12, and a Susan Skaggs, age 10.

In 1870 Elizabeth lived with husband William White and children Mary, Emma, Laura and John in Mt. Pleasant, Bates County, Missouri.  Her birthplace is given as Kentucky.

In 1880 Elizabeth lived with husband William White and children in Lincoln, Linn County, Kansas. She is listed as age 37 born in Kentucky, father born in Illinois and mother born in Kentucky.

Research to date:  In the 1860 Cass County, Missouri census Ashel and Elizabeth Rhodes live next door to Elizabeth Skaggs.  Elizabeth Rhodes was the sister of the infamous Larkin Skaggs, who participated in the attack on the town of Lawrence, Kansas in 1863.  Could our mysterious Elizabeth Skaggs have been closely related to Larkin Skaggs?

A few years ago our correspondent took a DNA test and found several matches to Merediths, Saunders and Sanders, but only a few Skaggs.  Larkin's brother Aaron married Nancy Sanders and Larkin's sister Cynthia married Lewis Meredith.

GEDmatch IDs for the correspondent's family line:  A294592  A427599  Can any of you Skaggs descendants out there match these IDs?

If anyone has any ideas or has solved the mystery please post in the comments.  Thanks for your efforts and good luck!

  1. Well, not sure if it helps but I am a Skaggs and my GedMatch ID connects with A294592 on Chromosome #22 with 8.6 (cM) 643 (SNPs). I think that amount is an minimal autosomal connection. I am a descendant from Old Peter and most of my family settled and stayed in eastern Kentucky and Ohio.
