A researcher recently shared an interesting 1695 deed from Essex County, Virginia that contains a clue about a "Scaggs Plantation" in that county. John Webster granted a tract of land in Essex County (previously Rappahannock County) to Edmond Roberts except for 100 acres lying on the south side of Browne's Branch commonly called Scaggs Plantation. The transcribed deed follows.

Rappahannock County was divided into Essex and Richmond Counties in 1692. It appears from the deed that the 100 acres known as Scaggs Plantation was settled in the old Rappahannock County (meaning prior to 1692) on the south side of Browne's Branch.
We need to trace the land title for Scaggs Plantation back from Edmond Roberts to John Webster to the original Scaggs who received the land patent from the Crown.
It looks like John Webster received the land patent for "Scaggs Plantation" from the Crown 20 October 1689. I wonder if there were Scaggs living on the land prior to its being patented by John Webster?
