There are many genealogical records available from the 1700s for James Skaggs, making him appear to have been everywhere at all times. I want to try to take advantage of years of genealogical research by many Skaggs researchers to separate these James from each other:
- James and Rachel Skaggs - the parents of the Long Hunters
- James Jr. and Mary Skaggs - the Longhunter James, son of James and Rachel
- James and Susanna Scaggs - lived side-by-side with the Long Hunters in Virginia, then went west and ended up in Warren County, Kentucky
- James C. Skaggs – Revolutionary War pensioner from South Carolina
- James Scaggs and Catherine Reaser/Mary Brinker - lived with first wife Catherine Reaser in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, then with second wife Mary Brinker in Frederick County, Virginia and the Chew's Folly farm in Prince George's County, Maryland
James Scaggs was born c. 1765 in Prince George's County, Maryland to Richard Scaggs and Sarah Selby. After the death of her father, William Selby, Sarah Scaggs inherited about 94 acres called "Chew's Folly." James had the following siblings:
- Christopher Scaggs m. Tabitha Morris in Bedford County, Virginia and settled in Spartanburg County, South Carolina
- Henry Scaggs in the 1800 census of Frederick County, Maryland
- Sarah Scaggs m. Benjamin Shaugh Hill and died 1793 in Frederick County, Maryland
- William Scaggs m. Mary, served in Frederick County militia during the Revolution, appeared in 1800 tax list for Bedford County, Virginia, owned 70 acres in Spartanburg County, South Carolina 1803-1809 and died in Putnam County, Georgia in 1813
- Eleanor Scaggs m. Benjamin Norris
- Elizabeth Scaggs m. (1) Samuel Compton and (2) Benjamin Shaugh Hill and died in Ross County, Ohio in 1828
- Rachel Scaggs
- Susannah Scaggs m. James Atkins
James Scaggs married Katherine Raeser in 1790 and they lived in Virginia. After Katherine's death James married Mary Brinker in 1798 in Frederick County, Virginia. James appeared in the 1800 Frederick County, Virginia Personal Tax List B.
James went to court in 1805 to get control of Chew's Folly from his siblings after his mother's (Sarah Selby Scaggs) death:

James and Mary Brinker Scaggs lived the rest of their lives at Chew's Folly in Prince George's County, Maryland. James died in 1822 and Mary in 1856.
I was asked help locate the Skaggs family living in Warren County Ohio in 1840. The Census record shows Uriah Skaggs abt 80 yrs old with 5 males and 2 females. Several of Uriah SR's sons indicate both of their parents were born in Maryland. I have identified the sons as: Thomas b 1797 in Maryland died Bef. 1860 in Jefferson Co Ohio; Matthew b 1801 m Hester; Noble b 1806 and Elisha b 1808; and Uriah II b 1814 d Bef.1880 m Jane Cox. Any help would be greatly appreciated . Don't have names or relationship of the 2 females that are 15-20 yrs old.
ReplyDeleteThe pioneer from this family was a John Scaggs from Maryland. He appears to have moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania then to Ohio. We don't yet know where John fits in to the Maryland Scaggs, however I think he may have been from western Maryland and might have been related to the mysterious Leonard Scaggs who is also a brick wall from Maryland.
