DNA Testing: Old Peter Skaggs and Rachel Skaggs Lester

Two documented descendants of Old Peter have matched each other and a descendant of the Rachel Skaggs who married William Lester on the same segment of DNA.  This means that it is very likely (90%) that all three testing participants share the same ancestor.  All three participants have extensive genealogies that show the common ancestor was an ancestor of both Old Peter and Rachel, likely their parents John and Ruth Skaggs.

Two of the testing participants descend back to John and Ruth Skaggs through Old Peter's sons, Peter Jr. and John, and the third descends back through Rachel Skaggs Lester's daughter Patsy who married Conley Blankenship.  This is the second group of three testing subjects to relate Old Peter to Rachel using autosomal DNA.

It would be great to get additional matches on Elkins descendants to demonstrate that Ruth Skaggs Bishop was born Elkins.

  1. This seems to confirm Old Peter's parents, but what about his grandparents? Can you explain what we know about the origins of the seemingly now confirmed Skaggs line coming through Kent County MD? It would be lovely to see where our line joins the rest of the Skaggs.

    1. We may need guys like you with the Skaggs surname to join the Skaggs DNA Project and take the Y-chromosome test. There's only about 5 or 6 out there the last time I looked.

  2. A fourth match has been confirmed tying Old Peter to Rachel Skaggs. A descendant of Old Peter, through his son Christian, has matched the descendants of Old Peter through John and Peter Jr. and the descendant of Rachel Skaggs (through her daughter Patsy) on the same DNA segment.
