Back before there was an Alabama, there were Skaggs pioneers in the area known as the Mississippi Territory. First there were the Skaggs intruders on Indian land, part of the Sims Settlement, who the government ran off the land in 1810. But that wasn't the last of the Skaggs in the Mississippi Territory.
During the War of 1812 a Wyley Scaggs is listed as a private in Captain John A. Allen's company of Mississippi Militia. Later, at Alabama statehood in 1819, a census was taken and two scaggs families were listed:
Thomas Scaggs - 1819 Census - Limestone County, Alabama
1 white male age 21+
5 white males under age 21
1 white female age 21+
2 white females under age 21
Willie Scaggs - 1819 Census - Limestone County, Alabama
1 white male age 21+
2 white males under age 21
1 white female age 21+
1 white female under age 21
I'm thinking this Willie Scaggs in 1819 is the same Wyley Scaggs back in the War of 1812 and this Thomas Scaggs is one of the Sims Settlement intruders. These guys settled in what eventually became Limestone County, Alabama. Willie Scaggs died sometime prior to the 1830 census when his widow, Rhoda, was enumerated:
Rhody Scaggs - 1830 Census Limestone County, Alabama
1 white male age 15-19
2 white males age 5-9
1 white female age 30-39
1 white female age 15-19
2 white females age 5-9
It appears that these Scaggs settlers in Alabama go back to the Sims Settlement intrusion in the early days of the Mississippi Territory.
Peter Skaggs is a common ancestor for many Skaggs, Scaggs and Skeggs families throughout the United States. This site exists as a single point of contact to encourage researchers to work together to uncover his place in their family histories.
