The information of interest to Skaggs researchers is in Box 14, Folder 10, the Lester Family research from 1968:
"My Ancestors" by Leonard G. Lester, lists descendants of John Lester, born 1752, died 1825. Other family names listed include Griffith, Duncalf, Greasley, Thomas, Roberts, Folke, Antrim, Plick, Terry, Wilson, Cox, West, Simmons, Howard, Sowers, Richards, Chaffin, Cooper, Duncan, Bishop, Scaggs, Peterman, Howell, Argabright, Hornbarger, Reed, Thompson, Simpkins, Kirk, Morris, Weirs, King, Akers, Morricle, Weddle, Lyons, Phillips, Bird, Burnette, Boothe, Nester, Compton, Hughett, Alley, Houchins, Altizer, Ross, Martin, Sumner, Dodd, Wright, Bolen, Bond and Quesenberry. Geographic locations listed include Montgomery County, Virginia, Floyd County, Virginia, Bedford County, Virginia, Surry County, Virginia, Fincastle County, Virginia and Botetourt County, Virginia.Those names Lester, Bishop and Scaggs and the Botetourt, Fincastle and Montgomery Counties in Virginia sound really interesting. I'm speculating that Leonard G. Lester did some research during the 1960s regarding Rachel Scaggs, William Lester and John Bishop, Rachel's step-father. I wonder what's really in that folder?

ReplyDeleteYes, Big Sandy Skaggs was written by Lucille Sparks-Edward's in 1978. It's full of information about Old Peter's descendants that is useful but contains a lot of speculation about Old Peter, Martha Cothon and their ancestors that has turned out to be incorrect.

DeleteMost of the detail about Old Peter's descendants is reasonably accurate. It's some of the stuff about Old Peter's ancestors that is pure speculation. It's starting to look like his ancestors were likely from Maryland. DNA testing is also failing to provide evidence that his wife, Martha, was an Indian.
DeleteNot much in the little Lester book concerning Scaggs and Bishops. It mainly focuses on the immediate family descendants and spouses from John Lester to Leonard Lester. The two references to Scaggs was a Ida Scaggs who married Harvey Lester on 12-23-1886 and a Parthena Scaggs who married a John D Lester.
