The 1840 census shows a family of Skeggs in Erie County, New York. These guys just don't seem to fit into any of the known Skaggs family groups. In later years, these Skeggs also start showing up in New York City. Who were they, and are they related to us?
A William Skeggs was in the 1840 Erie County, NY census. He later shows up in the 1850 and 1860 census for Erie County as born about 1789 in England. What! He was born 1 year after Old Peter Skaggs was married so he definitely was a latecomer. His son James shows up in the 1870 and 1880 census in New York City. Other siblings of James show up around Erie County over the years. A descendant of these Skeggs presents some interesting genealogical work at this web site.
Even though the births of our Skaggs founding settlers and this William Skeggs are about 150 years apart it would be interesting to compare some DNA tests to see if our families are connected back in England.
Peter Skaggs is a common ancestor for many Skaggs, Scaggs and Skeggs families throughout the United States. This site exists as a single point of contact to encourage researchers to work together to uncover his place in their family histories.
