Bible Entries for the Sims Settlement Scaggs

I have been scrolling back through the history of the Rootsweb Skaggs list and found an entry regarding one of the Sims Settlement Scaggs families.  This October 2008 entry seems long forgotten.  A poster to the old Genealogy.com Genforum board claimed to possess a Williams family bible with two Scaggs entries in it.

The Williams family was resident in Limestone and Madison Counties of Alabama and Giles County, Tennessee in the 1800s.  This bible listed birth dates for Rodah Scaggs as March 4, 1790 and Parnetta Scaggs as May 13, 1823.  These two Scaggs were mother and daughter.  Rhoda Scaggs was widow of a Willie Scaggs listed in the Alabama 1820 state census.  She shows up as head of household in the 1830 and 1840 censuses for Limestone County, Alabama.  Daughter Pernetta shows up in 1845 Alabama marriage records as married to a Josiah Isaacs, then is listed in the 1850 DeKalb County, Alabama census as Pernetta Isaacs, born in Alabama with young children born in Tennessee.

We currently think this Willie Scaggs, father of Pernetta, was a son of the Charles Scaggs who moved from East Tennessee to the Sims Settlement in the Mississippi Territory (which included Alabama) prior to statehood.  This Charles Scaggs was likely the eldest son of the Charles who died leaving an estate in Frederick County, Maryland in 1749 that was squandered by his widow, leaving the boys Charles, James and Samuel destitute.  We think Charles went to South Carolina to seek his fortune, then East Tennessee, then Sims Settlement.

  1. It has been my feeling that Pernetta was a dau of William and Rhoda. Glad to have this confirmation. We are descended from Thomas Skaggs possible brother of William.
