Skaggs Timeline in the New World before 1750

There's been a recent flurry of research activity for the Skaggs family in 17th century America.  I think it might be a good time to recap what has been discovered about the Skaggs family in the new world prior to 1750.  Below the fold is a chronological timeline for the Skaggs family in the new world.

  • MR. MORDECOY COOKE, 300 acs., upon the N. side of a swamp falling into Ware Riv., & opposite land of John Walker., 7 Sept. 1654, p. 375. Trans, of 6 pers: Thomas Scag (or Scay), Henry Norman, Mathew Borrowes, John Gassent, Thomas Cater, Richard Pevvis.
  • THOMAS DYER, 300 acs. Low. Norf. Co., 4 Mar. 1658/9, p. 259, (361). At a place called Beech ridge, beg. at the head of Robert Capps land. Trans, of 6 pers: Ann Sedger, Wm. Shreive, Rich. Skegs, Rich. Reynolds, Wm. Merriday, Ann Craford.   This Richard Scaggs was likely grandfather to the Richard Scaggs married to Grace
    • Richard Skegs EE:471-2 Film No.: In Maryland by 1666, Transcript. 9:477 MSA SC 4341- according to The New Early Settlers of Maryland   This Richard Scaggs was likely grandfather to the Richard Scaggs married to Grace
      • 1672-73 Mr. Richard Scaggs to be paid out of county levy – Talbot County, Maryland  This Richard Scaggs was likely grandfather to the Richard Scaggs married to Grace
        • 21 October 1673 Accompts to be paid out of Talbott County leavey by Mr. Stephen Tully high sheriff to Rich Scaggs to woorke at the Highwaies 4 dayes  This Richard Scaggs was likely grandfather to the Richard Scaggs married to Grace
          • Richard Sceggs land patent Talbot County, Maryland 50 acres, “Sceggs Spring” 1674  This Richard Scaggs was likely grandfather to the Richard Scaggs married to Grace
            • To Richard Scaggs, 300 Acres, on South East Side of South West Branch of St. George's Creek, Quit Rent, three Bushels. Recorded between Oct 1674 and Nov 1677 in New Castle County, Delaware during the government handover of Delaware from the Dutch to the English.  This Richard Scaggs was likely grandfather to the Richard Scaggs married to Grace

                • On 4 September 1677 Robert Skaggs witnessed a power of attorney granted by John Soper to John Bagwell in Rappahannock County, Virginia.
                • On 2 September 1679 Abraham Skaggs witnessed a power of attorney granted by Robert Moss to Thomas Parker in Rappahannock County, Virginia.
                  • UPDATE: Abraham Skaggs was actually Abraham Stapp, son-in-law of Robert Moss.
                • 6 September 1681 New Castle County, Delaware - A peticon being proferred in court by Capt. Edmund Cantwell for and in ye behalfe of Cornelis Commegies Junior sheweing that in the Jeare 1675 one Richard Scaggs and William Merritt did take up twoo tracts of Land Joyning boath togeather Contayning 400 acres which to this day Ly unsettled and ye person who tooke them up boath departed ye Country and as is sayed dead with out haveing made any Improovement thereon; the Peticoner therefore desiering a warrant for both parcells of Land to take up being 400 acres & Lying both together, the Court doe Grant ye Peticoner to take up ye said Land of Merritt & Scaggs according to his Peticon, hee making present Improovement & Settlement thereon, according to Lawe & ye Governors regulacons.  This Richard Scaggs was likely grandfather to the Richard Scaggs married to Grace
                • Mary Skaggs as guardian for Elizabeth Skaggs (19) by order of the Rappahannock County, Virginia Court recorded 2 April 1684.
                • Richard Scaggs as distressed debtor to Col. Philemon Lloyd of Talbot Co., Maryland in 1688.  This Richard was likely father to Richard Scaggs married to Grace
                • 10 Jun 1695 John Webster granted a tract of land in Essex County (previously Rappahannock County) to Edmond Roberts except for 100 acres lying on the south side of Browne's Branch commonly called Scaggs Plantation.
                • 12 May 1708 Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, Maryland – William Scaggs born to Richard and Grace ScaggsThis is the William who died testate in 1742 in Kent County.
                • 1709 May 29: Gilbert Falconar, brother of John, was in Kent County on May 29, 1709, when on behalf of John Falconar late of Cecil County but now residing in London, merchant, he conveyed to Richard Scaggs of Kent County, planter, land granted to John Falcanar called “The Exchange,” 100 acres  This Richard Scaggs married Grace and was the founder of the Maryland Eastern Shore Scaggs.  "The Exchange" appears in estate of son William in 1742 and is taxable to grandson Richard in 1783.
                  • 9 December 1709 Prince George’s County, Maryland – Charles Scaggs born to Aaron and Susanna Scaggs.
                  • 10 July 1714 Prince George’s County, Maryland – Moses Scaggs born to Aaron and Susanna Scaggs.
                  • Kent County, Maryland, March Court 1716 – Richard Scaggs on jury  This Richard Scaggs was likely husband of Grace and father of William
                        • 11 August 1716 Prince George’s County, Maryland – Susanna Scaggs born to Aaron and Susanna Scaggs.
                        • 28 February 1716/7 Prince George’s County, Maryland – John Moberly Sr. marries Susanna Scaggs, widow of Aaron ScaggsSecond marriage for Susanna
                        • 3 July 1718 Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, Maryland – Joseph Scaggs born to Richard and Grace Scaggs.
                        • Kent County, Maryland, August Court 1718 – Richard Scaggs on jury  This Richard Scaggs was likely husband of Grace and father of William
                            • Kent County, Maryland, June Court 1719 – Richard Scaggs on jury  This Richard Scaggs was likely husband of Grace and father of William
                              • 5 August 1721 Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, Maryland – John Scaggs born to Richard and Grace Scaggs.
                              • 8 May 1724 Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, Maryland – Richard Scaggs born to Richard and Grace Scaggs.
                              • 18 November 1725 Kent County, Maryland – Probate administrator bond for estate of Richard Scaggs posted by William Farrow, administrator, Surety: William Simson, Samuel Norris; Creditors: Jervis Skinner, Richard Gunn.  This Richard Scaggs was husband of Grace and father of William.
                              • New Castle County, Delaware deed. On 17 Nov 1726 John Anderson & Mary his wife & Francis Taylor & Mary his wife all of St. George's to Lewis Geton of St. George's Creek, yeomean. John Anderson & Margery his wife & Francis Taylor & Mary his wife for #162 granted to Lewis Geton a tract of land situated on the branch of St. George's Creek bounded by Scotts Run containing 162 acres being a part of a tract of land which was laid out on 26 Nov 1675 to Richard Scaggs of Kent County in Maryland & by the said Richard Scaggs by deed dated 6 Oct 1707 granted to Harmon Alrichs, late of the County of New Castle, dec. & by Mary Alrichs, relict & administrix for her late husband for the satisfaction & payment of a judgement obtained by Griffith Owens, practitioner of Physick, by granted said land to John Rees. John Rees by deed dated 16 Nov 1713 granted the same to James Anderson, dec. father of the above named John Anderson & by the above named James Anderson by his will the parcel was left to John Anderson. Signed John Anderson, Margery Anderson, Francis Taylor & Mary Taylor. Delivered in the presence of John Herbert & Enoch Jenkins. Recorded 10 Feb 1726/7.  This Richard was likely father to Richard Scaggs married to Grace

                              • 6 November 1728 Prince George’s County, Maryland – Susanna Scaggs Moberly married Henry Boulton.  Third marriage for Susanna

                              • 6 September 1742 Kent County, Maryland – William Scaggs signed will bequeathing ½ of tracts of land “Exchange” and “Castle Caru” to son Richard Scaggs and ½ of those lands to wife Mary reverting to son Richard upon her death. Wife Mary to keep estate until children, Richard and Elizabeth are of age. Wife Mary to keep Richard and Elizabeth until she re-marries.  William Scaggs, eldest son of Richard and Grace Scaggs

                              • Aug 16, 1749 Charles Scaggs of Frederick Co., MD wrote will leaving his estate to his wife, Elizabeth and three sons, Charles, James and Samuel. Charles, Jr., as the eldest son, inherited the real estate “Scaggs Delight.” James and Samuel each inherited a horse and livestock divided accordingly.  Charles and Elizabeth were likely the parents of James Scaggs (Susanna Moredock) and Charles Scaggs of Safeway Skaggs fame.
                              • 1749 Upper Sassafras Hundred, Kent County, Maryland tax list shows John Skags as taxable.  This was likely the John Scaggs born 1721 to Richard and Grace.
