The Skaggs Y-DNA project has been hard at work testing male volunteers who descend along different Skaggs family lines. Two volunteers have both tested as having the R-FT14580 haplogroup. One of the testers is a documented descendant of the Scaggs who settled the Maryland Eastern Shore in Talbot and Kent Counties. The second tester is a descendant of the Ohio pioneer Skaggs family with known roots in Maryland. These results show that the Ohio pioneer Skaggs are related to the Maryland Eastern Shore Scaggs, with details below the fold.
The Scaggs that settled the Maryland Eastern Shore have a well-documented genealogy so it was important to have test subjects from this line. Here is what we have for their genealogical line:
1 Richard Scaggs "the immigrant" c. 1658 (?-1681) R-BY101522- Cornelius Comegys Jr. attested to a New Castle County, Delaware court that Richard Scaggs had left the county and was "sayed dead" by 1681.
- Richard Scaggs listed as a distressed debtor to the estate of Col. Philemon Lloyd of Talbot County, Maryland in 1688.
- 162 acres in New Castle County, Delaware deeded by Richard Scaggs of Kent County, Maryland to Harmon Alrichs, surveyed by Richard Scaggs in 1675.
- In 1709 John Falconer, London merchant, deeded Richard Scaggs, a Kent County planter, 100 acres "The Exchange" which appears in grandson William Scaggs' will in 1742.
- Estate probated in 1726 in Kent County, Maryland
- "The Exchange" in William's will to son Richard
- William is likely the Most Recent Common Ancestor for the R-FT14580 descendants of both the Maryland Eastern Shore Scaggs and the Ohio pioneer Skaggs.
- Richard Scaggs was son of 1st wife Ann and inherited William's estate
- Richard is part of the Maryland Eastern Shore line of Scaggs
- John Scaggs was son of 2nd wife Mary Kear a.k.a. "Thear"
- Likely the progenitor of the Belmont County, Ohio pioneer Skaggs family line
