Skaggs DNA Testing: Zachariah Skaggs

I've written a lot about Zachariah Skaggs, about how he was not the father of Old Peter, about how he is frequently confused with a much younger Zachariah, etc.  Skaggs family Y-DNA testing has determined that Zachariah was closely related to the William Scaggs of the New River Valley of Virginia who married Esther.

Montgomery County, Virginia

Descendants of both Zachariah Skaggs who died in Russell County, Virginia in 1818 and William Scaggs who died about 1774 in the New River area of Virginia have tested with the Skaggs family Y-DNA project.  Both tested as R-FT6584 with the same SNP mutations as other Skaggs testers from other lines, however, the descendants of Zachariah and William both had a common STR mutation that the other lines did not have, indicating they were closer relatives.  I think it's likely that Zachariah and William were either brothers or first cousins since we believe they were about the same age.  Also, descendants of William Scaggs and Miriam Reed have tested with the mutation R-FT105290.  Here is what we have for their genealogical line:

1 John Scaggs (assumed father of Zachariah)  R-FT6584

  • In 1780 Zachariah Skaggs assigned land in Montgomery County per a Commissioners Certificate to John Charlton, recorded in 1782.  Zachariah was described as heir-at-law of John Scaggs.
    2 Zachariah Scaggs (before 1747-1818)
    + Nancy "Annie"
        3 Jeremiah Skaggs (1766-1798)
        + Hannah Lester
            4 John Skaggs (1795-1876)
            + Cynthia Horton
                5 Jeremiah Skaggs (1823-1864)
                + Mary Catherine Garrison
                    6 John B Floyd Skaggs (1853-1929)
                    + Mary E Andis
                        7 Charles Albert Skaggs (1877-1925)
                        + Lillie Margaret Laymon
    2 William Scaggs (1745-1774)
    + Esther
  • 1782: Joseph Scaggs heir at law to Wm Scaggs commissioners certificate for 200 acres on Little River to include improvement, 40 acres of which were surveyed for Esther Skeggs, April 19, 1775.  William Scaggs was dead prior to 19 Apr 1775.
        3 Joseph Scaggs (1766-1824)
        + Martha Seagraves
            4 William Scaggs (1800-1880)  R-FT105290
            + Miriam Reed
                5 Andrew Scaggs (1839-1905)
                + Peradine Akers
                    6 Arnold Perry Skaggs (1869-1940)
                    + Emma Azalee Duncan
                5 Humphrey Scaggs (1844-1924)
                + Delilah Akers
                    6 Sidney Jackson Skaggs (1889-1967)
                    + Bertha Isabell Bishop

Right now with our current testing the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) for these testing participants appears to the John Scaggs (assumed father of Zachariah), however additional testing may determine that the MRCA was Zachariah's grandfather.

If you are a male Skaggs, Scaggs, Skeggs, etc. and are interested in joining the Y-DNA project you can contact the Group Administrator here.  If you test as R-FT6584 with an additional mutation at STR 570 you may be a descendant of Zachariah or R-FT105290 as a descendant of William and part of this family group.
