Recently I put up a post about Leonard Scaggs and his relationship to Skeggs families. The Skaggs DNA project had a documented descendant of Leonard test and the results of course were very interesting.
There are two groups of Skaggs in America, R1a and R1b. They're both Skaggs, just two separate families. If you're new to this, you can catch up on my discussion about Skaggs family groups here. The documented descendant of Leonard tested as R1b. So Leonard's descendants join the descendants of Thomas Scaggs, the Scaggs pioneer in West Virginia as part of the R1b Scaggs family. At this point, I'm not sure how Leonard relates back to Richard Scaggs and Mary Brashear, the parents of Thomas Scaggs. Leonard might have been a grandson of the Richard Scaggs who married Sarah Selby, whose descendants also tested R1b. The 1800, 1810 and 1820 census records indicate that Leonard was born sometime between 1775 and 1784, consistent with a documented marriage date of 30 November 1802. This single test result makes it likely but not definite that the Nashville and Illinois Skeggs families are also R1b.
Below are the Skaggs family lines that have tested as R1b:
- Thomas Scaggs, born 22 October 1728 St. Barnabas Church, Prince George's County, Maryland
- Richard Scaggs, married Sarah Selby and lived on farm "Chew's Folly" in Prince George's County, Maryland
- Leonard Scaggs, married Sarah Rice and died in Frederick County, Maryland 4 October 1821
- James Skaggs married Rachel "The Long Hunters" died c. 1780 in Montgomery County, Virginia
- Old Peter Skaggs married Martha Cothron 24 June 1788 and died 21 October 1841 in Lawrence County, Kentucky
- Aaron Skaggs charged with adultery with Sarah Lyon in 1781 in Washington County, Virginia
- Charles Scaggs born in Maryland, was a Sims Settlement intruder
- James Scaggs married Susanna, born in Maryland and died in Warren County, Kentucky c. 1814
- William Scaggs married Esther, died c. 1774 in what was Fincastle County, Virginia
- John Skaggs born in Maryland died after 1840 in Ohio
If Skeggs male descendants of Leonard Skeggs are interested in participating in the Y-DNA project, please consider signing up for Y-DNA testing at the project link below. Please reach out to the Group Administrator for help choosing which test to take. Remember, Y-DNA testing is men only.
